Yesterday, Sunday, November 24, 2024, the Journalists Protection Network in Yemen was launched, consisting of 12 international and local professional organizations concerned with providing protection services and legal support to journalists and supporting freedom of expression in Yemen.

The network aims to enhance coordination, integration and continuity of efforts in protecting journalists and ensuring their safety and independence, as well as journalistic and media institutions, and supporting journalistic and media freedoms and freedom of opinion and expression in Yemen.

The network includes six international and regional organizations:

• Article 19 – Rory Peck Trust
• Global Media Defense Fund (GMDF)
• Freedom House
• American Center for Justice
• Women Journalists Without Chains

In addition to six local media organizations and institutions:

• The National Organization of Yemeni Reporters “SADA”
• Protection Center for Human Rights
• Free Media Center for Investigative Journalism
• Abductees Mothers Association
• Peace Paths Foundation
• Yemen Future Foundation for Cultural and Media Development.

The launch of the network comes within the outcomes of the project to ensure legal protection for journalists, which is implemented by the National Organization for Yemeni Reporters “SADA” in partnership with UNESCO – Global Media Defense Fund (GMDF), and aims to enable Yemeni journalists to quickly and safely access comprehensive protection services and legal advice and assistance services.

The launch event was attended by Mr. Nejib Mukni, Communication and Information Officer at UNESCO’s Office for the Gulf States and Yemen, Ms. Maha Assablani, Yemen Program Officer at IMS, and Mr. Mohammed Mandour, Middle East Researcher at the Committee to Protect Journalists, as well as representatives of partner member organizations.
